Let the reading commence

Come one come all to the POC Reading Challenge. This challenge was put in place to have myself and others read POC authors and books. There will be a master list to choose from, I am researching now and asking the experts for help in this. I would love for everyone who is participating to suggest a book or two in the comments for the master list if possible.

For this challenge all you need to do is grab the button from the side bar and add it to a post saying you are committed to reading POC authors and characters in this coming year. You do not have to pick your books now but you have to sign up to a level of how many you will read. Leave a comment to your post stating how many books you will read this year and tada automagically you are done.

Level 1: Read 1-3 POC books
Level 2. Read 4-6 POC books
Level 3. Read 7-9 POC books
Level 4. Read 10-15 POC books
Level 5. Read 16-25 POC books

Comments, suggestions, ways of making this better are greatly appreciated. Contributing posters for reviews, news, and book ideas are greatly appreciated.

**If you have a blog, you can sign up below, preferably including a link to your post about joining the challenge (and your book list if you put one together)! Don't forget to grab our button for your post!**

  6. I will be reading at least a level 4! I'll aim for level 5, but don't know how much free time I will have to read anything this year, sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  7. @Saundra Thanks so much for the book list!

@Ellen even reading one is awesome so thanks so much.

    ReplyDelete
  8. While I'm not going to specifically seek out titles at this moment (my reading schedule is so full already!) I did add this to my challenge page. I've read 2 already this year, and I'll add titles and reviews to it as I read them.

Because my daughter Maggie is half-Vietnamese, I have a special interest in Asian books.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Escaping The Tiger by Laura Manivong (March 2010)

Tortilla Sun by Jennifer Cervantes (May 2010)

Under the Mesquite by Guadalupe Garcia McCall (fall 2010)

The Red Umbrella by Christina Diaz Gonzalez (May 2010)

    ReplyDelete
  10. @koolaid mom try Silver Phoenix!
    @Christina promote away!

  11. I'm in at Level Four. Thank you for the suggestions--I look forward to reading and reviewing these titles!

  12. Wonderful that you're hosting this challenge! I will commit to Level 5 and work on a book list for you.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm signing up for level 3 and will pick my books as I go along. Thank you for hosting!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I am in for level 5; thank you, Pam, for this great addition to the Challenge World!

    ReplyDelete
  15. oh wow guys... Thanks so much for signing up and at such great levels.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Quick question: Do we have to choose books off the master list or can they be any books by/about POC? I ask because I tend to have different reading habits than the rest of the blogosphere and don't read much modern fiction. In the next month I'm reading, for instance, Zora Neale Hurston and Richard Wright. I would love to sign up for this at level 4 or level 5 but I have to make sure I can choose my own books first. I'll come back and check the comments. And btw this challenge is awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm committing myself to Level 5, and will be choosing books as they come. Posted about it HERE. Great initiative. Thanks. =)

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm signing up for level 5, and made up a tentative list of books I'd like to read but am not committing myself to reading exactly those books. My final list will probably shape up to be different, but I wanted to make a kind of wishlist while I was thinking about it. You might find the list useful for the list you're putting together here.

    Posted about it here.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm doing level 5, but combining this challenge with the ones I do on Reading in Color blog.

I'm thinking of children between 5 and 10 and suggest the Akimbo series, any books by Jeri Chase Ferris, I also liked A Horn for Louis by Eric Kimmel.

I admit I need to be up to date. If you know of POV authors with titles for that age range, please post here. Thanks!

I'm posting about this challenge Friday!

    ReplyDelete
  20. wow you guys are SO SO AWESOME! Amanda the list is just to help people get started you can read any books you want for the challenge.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Awesome! Thanks Pam. I will blog about this soon and sign up for level 4, with the option to go up to level 5. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm in! I'm participating at at least level 5 though I may try to reach for the imaginary level 6. Thanks for hosting this!

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Pam ~ I added Silver Phoenix to my wishlists. I love the cover, very beautiful :-)

I went ahead and committed at level 3, but I'm sure I'll have more than 9 books by the end of the year. LOL, the manga books will do that for me. I have other, more serious books, though, too.

    ReplyDelete
  24. @Vasilly yay I will give you a special imaginary level 6 prize :P

@thekoolaidmom I am going to buy Silver Phoenix and I just bought Devil's Kiss. Reading The School for Dangerous Girls now. Protag is of Latino origin, I have a book from a Mexican friend of mine from his fave author, and I won another Latin book from Jackie @ Farmlane books the other day!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I signed up in the wrong place. I'm going to try Level 3.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Signing up. Overachiever so going for Level 5. But also a slacker, so I'll probably be the worst at actually reporting back.

That said, for all titles that are eligible for YALSA lists and awards (the details vary for pub date etc), I urge you to nominate the eligible books with POC for the lists - - best fiction, quick picks, popular paperbacks, nonfiction, printz, etc, etc. see www.ala.org/yalsa and follow links.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm game! Signing up for a level 3 as well.

Here are a few title suggestions for the master list:

    Lybrinth by Pearl North
The Call of Zulina by Kay Marshall Strom
    The Journey by J. Adams
    Awake by Wendy Raven McNair

Grabbing a button for my blog. :-)_

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oops! That should be Asleep by Wendy Raven McNair which is the first of her trilogy (Awake being the second).

There's also The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin which I'm very much looking forward to.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm going for level 4 with the possibilty of going up to level 5. I've got a list but I might add and take away.

  30. is this only black authors? I dont' know a lot. Are you putting up a list??? I can read 1-3 anyway, i do knwo of Frank Yerby

    ReplyDelete
  31. No not only black authors and there is a helpful list to the left on the blog. It's any person of color.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Golly, I remember Frank Yerby. He wrote really good novels. I wonder if is still living.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I shall commit to Level 4.

I'd also like to suggest some writers.

Dorothy Koomson (The Cupid Effect, My Best Friend's Girl)
Zadie Smith (White Teeth, On Beauty).
Margaret Cezair-Thompson (The True History of Paradise, The Pirate's Daughter)
Helen Oyeyemi (The Icarus Girl, The Opposite House)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Okay, I'm giving this a try. I am so glad y'all put up suggestions.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'll ETA my Reading Challenge post to include this. But for now the link I added in is my general book blog URL.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Pam,

Is this running all year? I need a level 10. I'm in 6 challenges already. Maude, help me, but I have to do this. Thing is like Terri, I read about 97% POC. That's not hard when you consider how diverse the world is.

    Anyhoo, level 5 it is.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks for hosting this! I am definitely in. Here's my post.

I have a couple authors to suggest:

    1. Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis & 2, Embroideries)
    2. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni (The Mistress of Spices, Sister of my heart, One Amazing Thing)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Susan! I should make some more levels I know. I am always underachieving! haha.

Thanks for joining and the suggestions guys. Don't forget to sign up with the linky dodad that Katy put in for us.

  40. I am up for the challenge. I am definitely going for level 5.

I do have one question: Can audio books by POC's be included? The reason why I am asking is I read books and I also do audio books. I am a multi tasker and I love to listen to stories being read while I am doing housework or as an alternative to watching television.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I really thought I posted this the other day.Sorry! My blog has lists and lists of YA POC books. They're on the pages titled "School Reads" for 06 through 09. Enjoy!! http://campbele.wordpress.com

    ReplyDelete
  42. Pam,

I'm slow. I don't see a name box or Mr. Linky. Where is it? The link to the right links to a post.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I got one more author to suggest. Sorry for these sporadic posts. :D

Sapphire, author of "Push", "American Dreams"

    ReplyDelete
  44. Susan, go to the bottom of the numbered blog links at the bottom of the post. When you click the blue "add your link" button it will give you boxes to fill out. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh yeah, I guess when I said I was signing up I should have posted the link to my post too. Oops!
It's at the bottom of this post :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'll go for at least level 4 - depends on how organized I am!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I was going to do this anyway, before I knew about the challenge, but would love to sign up. Is it okay for authors to join?

    Cheers,
    Karen

  49. Karen, we'd love to have you join the challenge! :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. So I've signed up (#27 on the widget thing above) and I'll make sure to keep the challenge alive on my LiveJournal. As a writer myself, although I talk regularly about books I'm excited about, I rarely post real 'reviews'.

However, I'm aiming for a minimum of 10 books this year, by or about POC (level 4, right?) and I'll make sure to talk about it on my blog at least once a month.

    Cheers,
    Kaz

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm in ... Yes, I swore off challenges, but this is too important! I'm in at level 3.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I am definitely up for this challenge. I will be signing up for level 4. Thanks for hosting this.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'll officially sign up for level four, though I might reach level five -- I'll see what I can do :) I blog about YA (and a few MG) books on my blog, and I also try to promote ones I love on my website here. This is a great idea, btw!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hi! I'm excited about this challenge and definitely going to sign up, but I wanted to ask a clarifying question - when reading books by or about PoC, I know the "about" includes fiction with PoC characters, but does it include nonfiction about PoC?

I want to read up on segregation-era events, and while some of the books I have my eye on are written by PoC, not all of them are - would these books still fall under the reading challenge?

    ReplyDelete
  55. I never do challenges, and since I don't actually review books on my blog I can't say I'll review books there. But I will be doing this challenge privately. I feel happy to say that I've already read many on your list. Will watch for more!
Meanwhile, I'll be looking to highlight good covers with people of color represented on them on my blog.

    ReplyDelete
  56. TacitHydra - I would think nonfiction written about POC would be acceptable regardless of author? There are a few in the big list about POC written by non-POC journalists, historians, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sign me up please-in 2010 I read and posted on 52 works by POC authors-great idea for a challenge and I look forward to reading some great reviews

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm signing up, hoping to do Level 4 or perhaps even better. I think this is a wonderful idea, it's just sad that it takes an official challenge sometimes to get us to read what we should be reading already.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'm signing up for level 5. It's great that this challenge is up and I'm really looking forward to participating.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm in. I'll come back this weekend with my Challenge post link. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for the 16 - 25 range.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'm in, too. Since I'm planning to read at least 14 books for my own Black History Month celebration, this shouldn't be too tough. I'll work on generating a list and post about it soon. Thanks!

  62. Just joined for Level 4. Will probably read more, but I think that's a good start.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Hi Pam! I just joined the challenge. I haven't put up a list of books to read yet. I'll probably won't to be honest. As much as I like making the lists, I never really stick to them anyway!

I have t admit, I wasn't sure whether I would sign up for this challenge or not. I choose books for content, not the color of the author (or culture, or religion, or sexual orientation). Honestly, I don't LIKE choosing books that way. I try to go through life color-blind. BUT, I do like diversifying my reading. And I hope that this "Challenge" will help do just that.

I'm taking Level 2 because I don't do well in challenges. I have to go slow and easy.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I am shamefully late in joining; I'll have my head examined shortly. Meanwhile, I'll go for level 4. I'll link to the challenge in my next post.

  86. what a great challenge. I enjoy magical realism after a brief introduction to it in college, so I may even own 50 books! but I love the idea of a "better picture of reality, history, truth, human nature, and the nature of stories." by focusing your reading!

    ReplyDelete
  87. It's a little late for me to sign up now. Will you be hosting this challenge for 2011?

  88. Thanks for putting so much effort into this! It's wonderful people like you that keep the fandom alive and well.
