I am so overwhelmed and so happy with all the support that you readers have given us with the PoC reading challenge this year. I never thought that it would take off the way that it did and I couldn't have done it without you the readers and the other two Ari, and Katy who take care of all the prizes and linking up and all the generally cool stuff that has been going on here.
I would like to invite you all to join in the fun again. I know it is challenge sign up time and everyone is scrambling to join everything and you are probably thinking seriously about which challenges are right for you. Please remember that this challenge is about diversifying your reading and showing the publishers we do care about PoC literature and we want to see more of it on the shelves of bookshelves. That we do not want to see the white washing of covers and we will not stand for it.
We had 83 participants last year and I would love more than anything to reach 100 this year. Please do not forget about what an important issue this is and even though things have been going well for quite a while these issues are never going to be over and we have to be proactive. So please join our challenge and tell others it is open again.
Level 1: Read 1-3 POC books
Level 2. Read 4-6 POC books
Level 3. Read 7-9 POC books
Level 4. Read 10-15 POC books
Level 5. Read 16-25 POC books

ReplyDeleteThank you for joining again!
ReplyDeleteI discovered last year that I read at least 33 POC books (I just checked my blog labels). So, here I go, adding another challenge for 2011
ReplyDeleteYou can count me in too. I will be doing a post about this later when I'm not feeling so lazy. YAY PoC books!!
ReplyDeleteI'll be signing up for level 4 tomorrow when I can do a blog post. I'm excited! =)
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely going to sign up for level 4, but I'm going to shoot for level 5. Thanks for doing this!

ReplyDelete-Shannon
Shannon, you join you blog about the challenge, each month you post a link here on this blog for PoC books you have reviewed and you are automatically entered.
ReplyDeleteI'm in. My goal is level 4.
ReplyDeleteI am in for level 5. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI'm in for level 5.
ReplyDeleteIn 2010, I read 8 POC Author books, so I'm aiming for one level up this year: level 4.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I don't have a blog (I'm using my Twitter account). Hope that's okay!
I'm not very good at challenges but this one is worth joining! I'm going to go for level 5.
ReplyDeleteI read 15 books that fit this category last year so I'm sure I can do level 5 with no problem.
ReplyDeleteI signed up for 2010 but I didn't know we were supposed to post each month the books we read. Glad to know for 2011. I'm signing up for level 5 again, for the 25 books. I still have about 3 more to go to get to 25 for this year. But proud of my progress.
ReplyDeleteI will be participating!:) I will do level 5.
ReplyDeleteMy wife is a young scholar from the Caribbean, and she's also a voracious reader so I asked if she'd put together a list of Caribbean authors of color as a jumping off point for a POC Reading Challenge. (And to help me expand my reading list!)
ReplyDeleteWe wanted to share the list for anyone else that wants to read some Caribbean lit: http://pinesandmaples.dreamwidth.org/810826.html
I'm going to go for level 4.
ReplyDeleteI'm in for this one! I'm going for Level 4.
ReplyDeleteI'm in and going for level 4 but I don't have a blog. Is that required?
ReplyDeleteHi Wana!
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to have a blog--if you have an account at GoodReads or a similar site you can post your reviews that way and then link back to them here. :)
Signing up for Level 4!
ReplyDeleteI'm signing up. I'll go with Level 1 for now. ^^
ReplyDeleteI've signed up for Level 5.
ReplyDeleteI'm really excited for this, thanks for hosting it!
ReplyDeleteI am going to safely say Level 3 but I am going to aim higher. Thanks for hosting this.
ReplyDeleteGoing with level 2, just cause reading was such a disaster last year, but I should be going way higher!
ReplyDeleteI'm also gonna pass on the word to my non-bloggy friends!
Majorly failed last year, but I'm trying for level 3 again.
ReplyDeleteI'm signing up for level 3, but I might be able to go higher.
ReplyDeleteStarting Grad School this year so I'm signing up for Level Two!
ReplyDeleteI am going for level 1. I look forward to this challenge. I enjoy reading. However, I have little free time now because of other obligations.
ReplyDeleteI heard of this from April at Books and Wine and I'm excited to join this year! I'm going to try a level 3!
ReplyDeleteJust signed up for level 1. So many POC books in my pile for the year.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful challenge. I set an overall reading goal of 52 books for 2011, now committing to having half be by or about POC. So happy I stumbled on your site. : )
ReplyDeleteThis will be my first year participating in the challenge, but I'm really excited about it! I'm so glad I found out about this. Since it's my first year, I'm going to sign up for level 1, but hopefully I'll read more than that level.
ReplyDeleteHello! This looks like an exciting Reading Challenge. We at GatheringBooks would love to join for the year. We are signing up for Level 3! =) I've already put up our blogpost in connection with this Reading Challenge. We look forward to linking you to our reviews very soon. =)
ReplyDelete- Myra
I'll take Level Two, and am looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteI'm signed up for level four! It looks to be an interesting year for reading.
ReplyDeleteYou guys effin rock!
ReplyDeleteI'm signing up for Level 5 and I'm really looking forward to adding to my TBR list based on other participants' reviews. Thanks very much for hosting!
ReplyDeleteI'm signing up, evenn though I'm keeping it low-key. My reading has been at an all-time low, there's been a slow down....I'm tryin', but it's been tough to get more than one book read in a two week period. ugh.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm just going to do my best. Happy to sign up again this year - thanks for hosting this.
:)
Is it too late to join?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not too late!
ReplyDeleteThink I'll go for level 4!
ReplyDeleteactually make it level 5.
ReplyDeleteI will choose Level 4 for my POC reading challenge
ReplyDeleteHello! We at GatheringBooks initially signed up for Level 3 - we are upgrading it to Level 5 since we have technically just completed the challenge with our Last Post. We have already finished 9 books in all. So we aim for 25. =)
ReplyDeleteI'm aiming for level 3... though I hope to exceed that target!
ReplyDeleteHello! We have already completed the challenge but we will still continue posting our links until the end of the year and challenge ourselves to see how many books we'd be able to complete for 2011. Thanks for hosting this! =)
ReplyDeleteOoh, just found out about this challenge. I would love to join; I'm aiming for level 4 for the rest of the year.
ReplyDeleteI just thought it's not too late for me. I've read some books already. Count me in. I have to fix up my link. I'm so excited.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing Level 2, 4-6.

ReplyDeleteI have a gravatar or avatar. I don't know why it's not showing.
I have over six books read already for the challenge. I tried to enter my link for January. January linky is closed. Does that mean I'm too late for the challenge? Thanks for answering the question. Does it mean books do not have to be read during that particular month? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteIf I can enter, I would move up to Level 5.
ReplyDeleteI meant Level 3 is possible. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteTea, it's not too late. You are welcome to join in! You can add your older reviews to the link-up month that is currently open. It's OK if they're older as long as you haven't linked them up in earlier months' link-ups.
ReplyDeleteMe want in tooooo!! just got information on this wonderful challenge which i usually skip but i'm so loving this. so please put me in. pretty plez!!
ReplyDeleteHi everyone (Pam, especially)
ReplyDeleteI just stumbled upon "Reading Challenges" for the first time and as an avid book lover and reader can't believe what I've been missing. I am a Canadian volunteering in Gaborone, Botswana right now and so found this POC Reading Challenge to be right up my interest ally at the moment. I just finished doing research on the Black Consciousness Movement which inspired me to purchase two new books by African authors. Being in Botswana has also got me interested in Alexander McCall Smith's #1 Ladies Detective Agency Series (I'm on Book 4). I am currently reading (almost finished) "Indaba, My Children", a book on Africa tribal history and legend which I will post a review of shortly.
Since I am coming into this challenge half way through, I will challenge myself to Level 3.
